The Stepney Shahjalal Mosque & Cultural Centre is a mosque located in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, England. It was established in 1985 to cater to the needs of the growing Muslim population in the area. Before the mosque was built, local Muslims would pray in congregation at each other's homes. Recognizing the need for a dedicated space, the community came together to form the Stepney Shahjalal Mosque Committee.
The mosque aims to serve the community in various ways. Firstly, it provides facilities for the five daily prayers, allowing local Muslim residents to come together and worship. Additionally, the mosque offers Islamic education for men, women, and children, teaching them about the Quran and the practices of Prophet Muhammad (s). It also functions as a social and recreational hub for the community, providing a space for members to gather and engage in activities.
In addition to serving the Muslim community, the Stepney Shahjalal Mosque also strives to increase awareness and understanding of Islam among non-Muslims. By promoting community cohesion and social harmony, the mosque aims to foster a sense of unity and cooperation between different groups.
Over the years, the Stepney Shahjalal Mosque has undergone several developments to accommodate the growing number of worshippers. It started in a caretaker hut on the grounds of Shandy Park, accommodating up to 50 worshippers. With the support of the local community, it eventually acquired a purpose-built mosque and cultural center on the same grounds. However, due to the large number of worshippers, additional portable buildings were added to accommodate approximately 800 people inside the mosque, with a significant number still praying outside during Jummah and Ramadan.
The mosque is managed by a board of trustees, elected every two years by members of the mosque. Its activities and financial matters are regulated by the Charity Commission and Company law in the UK. With its commitment to serving the community and promoting understanding, the Stepney Shahjalal Mosque plays an essential role in the lives of local Muslims in Tower Hamlets.
